After nearly a year of being on the Android and iOS stores, Clash Royale has become one of the most popular apps of the year and it isn’t hard to see why. If you were late to the game, we completely understand why you may be feeling a little out of the loop after first loading the game up. Initially, you might get frustrated at the lack of victories and a ‘strategy’ seems a long way away. However, we have done all the research and put the hours into the game so you can start off with superior knowledge to other beginners in the game.
In this game, not only is it important to build a good deck but you will also progress if you play good defence and offence whilst also managing elixir and gold resources. If you have just downloaded the game and are looking for a bit of help on all this and more, don’t worry as we have you covered. Welcome to the ultimate Clash Royale strategy guide!
Know Your Cards – First and foremost, you need to build a good deck and you can only do this once you get to know your cards. As well as the elixir each card costs, you should also look at the damage that they can cause. In Clash Royale, you can also combine cards so see what damage they can do when combined with others. For example, combinations like the Musketeer and the Giant can be deadly early on. As you become familiar with the cards, you will learn what works and what doesn’t. If you aren’t willing to learn the cards, you will be limiting your experience instantly.

Create a Balance – Sticking with the theme of your deck, you should know that balance is often the key to success. At first, the temptation to fill a deck with heavy hitters will be high but remember the elixir cost involved in this. With a heavy hitting team, your movements will be slow and you won’t be able to move as often. Therefore, don’t overlook the usefulness of Goblins or Archers as they can move quickly. Once you have this balance, you will be hard to beat. So far, we have found that an average elixir cost of between 3.5-4.5 seems to work well.
Keep Progressing – With every deck that you have, there is always going to be room for improvement so make little changes and assess the results. Every now and then, swap out different cards and assess what combinations work the best for you. As long as you keep the changes small, you can pinpoint what is working and what isn’t and this is a surefire way to get to know your cards.
Kill Zone – Over time, we realised that good defence was essential to success on this game. As a beginner, you will want to make use of the kill zone which is the middle zone on your side. Rather than meeting attackers at the bridge, wait until they hit the kill zone and then put the quicker cards in action. Most of the time, the attackers will be distracted from their main aim and they will also be hit by the cannon balls and arrow comings from the towers. Instantly, you will weaken the attack.
Play to Your Strengths – Ultimately, there is no point choosing to employ an attacking strategy when you have a weak hand. As you are randomly dealt a hand from your deck, you may have a hand of lightweight cards. If this occurs, just play it slow and let the opponent make the first attack. As well as knowing what tower they are targeting, this will also allow you to build up elixir. As the game progresses, you will receive your stronger cards who will join the remainder of your forces when you choose to attack.
Upgrade Carefully – At first, you will want to upgrade all of your cards immediately but you will be better off waiting. On the whole, it is cheaper to upgrade common cards and only spend gold on the cards that you use often because these are the ones that will stay with you. At regular intervals, you will be given free chests as well as when you win a battle; with this in mind, you will have more chances to upgrade as you progress in the game. However, gold is still relatively rare or valuable at the very least so you need to be choosy with your upgrades. If you get it right, you will have a great chance at beating all the opponents who got it wrong to start.
Build Elixir – When you first start playing, you may be tempted to throw everyone forward on an attack as the battle commences. However, this will drain your elixir and you may not have the right cards to mount an attack as discussed previously. Instead, you need to treat it like a strategic battle and start carefully. With each second that passes, you will receive one point of elixir so starting defensively can be worthwhile in the long run.
Then, when you have enough elixir, you can start to plan an attack with combinations of cards. As an example, you could choose the Giant but they will need backup troops to succeed. In your first wave of attack, it is always best to use one combination to see how it performs rather than throwing four out there at once to earn money online. Remember, you also need elixir for defending so you need to find the right balance between attack and defence. If possible, always keep defence as a priority and then attack whenever you get the chance. As long as you look after defence, there is no way you can lose!
So there we have it, seven superb tips that will improve your Clash Royale game in an instant. As long as you keep these tips in mind, it is only a matter of time before you win battles consistently.
